ABSTRACT

A common problem for parents can be seen at the till in the supermarket. Some parents with young children may try to leave them at home when they go shopping and other children cope well in the supermarket. However, for some, being confronted by tiers of sweets at the till can be a challenge and you might overhear the following:

Child asks “Can I have . . .?”

Mum says “No!”

Child starts to repeat more loudly “Can I have?” or cry.

Mum says “No” rather more loudly.

The child tries to grab the sweets or to tantrum – Mum tries to maintain her position.

Other people start to take notice.

Mum picks up the sweets and puts them in the shopping trolley.

Child beams and peace is restored.
