'Was the mannish lesbian a myth created by "the [male] pornographic mind" or by male sexologists intent on labelling nineteenth-century feminists as deviant? Maybe the old photographs portray a few misguided souls — or perhaps those "pre movement" women thought men's ties were pretty and practical?'
