WITHOUT YOU I'm Nothing, the cinematic conversion of Sandra Bernhard's "smash hit one-woman show" (as she so frequently reminds us), represents a fascinating and offbeat interpretation of the Jewish female body as "performative accomplishment.'" The film restages Bernhard's successful 1989 offBroadway show of the same name in predominantly black supper clubs in Los Angeles. Despite the fact that in the stage show within the film Bernhard repeats much of the "original" material, the film is not a literal record of the stage show. However, the film does employ some of the conventions of concert film and documentary, intercutting Bernhard's onstage performances with interviews with "real people"-except all the "real people" are performed by actors.
