ABSTRACT
The United States is drawing India into a strategic role in the Asia Pacific. The relationship between them was long distant and strained as India tried to maintain its strategic autonomy. But with the rise of China, the US now wants to help India become a major world power. It is encouraging India to extend its reach into the Pacific Ocean and form strategic partnerships with its Pacific allies. But while India is being drawn closer to the United States, it still remains wary of compromising its freedom of action.
