Exploring the past and its legacy-frequently in the hope of finding the origins of present calamities-is an exercise that Latin American intel lectuals have always found tempting. Argentine history in particular, where trends often found in other Latin American countries reach a feverish intensity reflected in a puzzling oscillation between dizzying rises and catastrophic falls, multiplies the opportunities for engaging in such self-congratulatory or anguished explorations.
