This chapter is different from Chapters 3 to 10 as we are not considering marketing or public relations separately. Rather, we are considering how marketing and public relations are used alone and together within one communication channel. Throughout this chapter we will weave in data from a content analysis (see Appendix) conducted of 209 worldwide event websites1 to assess how web technologies are being used.2 We will first briefly explain the meaning of the Internet, and we will then assess its key characteristics. The chapter will address the concepts of Web 1.0 and Web 2.0, and then evaluate how events have used web technologies.
