The Sanctuary Model is an attachment-based organizational approach. For us, it is all about creating and sustaining healing relationships that do not repeat, and that in fact change, the relationship patterns that have been damaging for the children and adults who come into human service programs. When I originally wrote Chapter 2 based on the idea of Constructing the Social, there was relatively little scientific literature to draw on about the importance of attachment and interpersonal relationships in understanding how to help people who had experienced trauma. The study of trauma as a specific and definable problem had not yet occurred when I was in my training during the late 1960s and through the 1970s. But in retrospect, there were experiences and knowledge that prepared me for what was to come.
