ABSTRACT
The rhetorical strategies in the GM debate make it part of a larger complex of issues. Through metaphors and comparisons, GM has become entangled with themes of warfare, terrorism, intercultural conict and religious difference. In the intricate web of crossreferences which emerges, the boundaries between what is merely figurative and what is literal are not always clear.
