The most fruitful form of argumentation is topical invention – so Vico recommends, and so Jung comes to choose as a scientist, in my estimation. Descartes’ insistence that extreme scepticism would reveal ‘clear and certain truths’ by dialectical logic was the prevailing pedagogic and epistemic view at the time. Vico’s counter moves begin with revealing definitions and purposes.
