ABSTRACT
OFTEN SEVERE EPISODES OF abnormal behaviour occur against a backdrop of more pervasive personality-based difficulties. To address this observation, distinctions are made in ICD 10 and DSM IV between episodic psychological disorders on the one hand and longstanding and persistent personality disorders on the other. Furthermore, it is accepted that in clinical practice many patients will present with both classes of disorders.
