Social impact assessment : an aid to understanding the likely effects of a proposed intervention

Projects undertaken without any prior knowledge of their likely social impacts tend to produce unintended hardships for the local population. There is now a growing awareness that projects designed to promote development should be so conducted that they do not generate any negative impacts, and in particular, do not disadvantage the poorer groups. This has given rise to the need to consider beforehand the full implications of a proposed development intervention.
