ABSTRACT

In this chapter I outline the dynamics and dilemmas women leaders face. I examine the extent to which a leadership game and its gendered rules exist. The rules of the game are seldom devised by women and consequently they must learn them in order to survive in academia. Interactions between women may not always be positive and self-affirming. Rather than being accepted or celebrated for moving into senior roles, women leaders are punished for violating scripts about desirable femininity. Importantly this chapter draws together voices of Indigenous women and highlights the challenges they face as they encounter institutions and the operation of White privilege.
