Ian L. McHarg was one of the most influential persons in the environmental movement, bringing environmental concerns into broad public awareness and ·ecological planning methods into the mainstream of landscape architecture, city planning and public policy. Growing up outside Glasgow, Scotland, within sight of both the Scottish Highlands and the gritty INDUSTRIAL CITY, led to his life's work to reshape the relationship between the city and the natural environment. For more than six decades, beginning with his apprenticeship to a landscape architect in Glasgow at age 16, McHarg was a student, professor, author, public figure and practising landscape architect.
