It may be that some of the issues raised so far in this book have not loomed large in many readers’ minds, but that is unlikely to be the case for issues raised in this chapter. Many people in recent years, students included, have been actively engaged in New Age events; some have demonstrated on a regular basis against the environmental changes brought about, for example, by the laying of new trunk roads through areas of natural beauty; others have involved themselves in furthering animal welfare or opposing the genetic modification of crops. With the issues raised at this stage of the book we are in fact dealing with matters which dominate contemporary moral thinking.
