All this is a long way from Karl Marx. He wished to turn history into a science: in Engel’s words, ‘Just as Darwin discovered the laws of evolution in nature, Marx discovered those of evolution in society.’ Indeed, the concept of class-struggle was borrowed from that of natural selection.
