ABSTRACT

Nagano, Osami (1880–1947) Japanese admiral. Nagano graduated from the Naval Academy (1900) and steadily advanced in rank and positions, serving mostly in staff assignments. He did, however, head a land-based navy heavy gun unit supporting the army during the siege of Port Arthur during the 1904–05 RussoJapanese War. Naval attaché in Washington, DC (1920–23), he visited the United States again (1927, 1933), was promoted to rear admiral (1928), and commanded the Naval Academy (1928–29).
