ABSTRACT
Stars are things that shine brightly in the darkness. The word ‘star’ has become so taken for granted as meaning anyone who’s a little bit famous in a little bit of the world that we’re apt to forget just how appropriate the term was for people who did seem to be aglow on stages and screens in darkened halls. And no star shone more brightly in that firmament than Lillian Gish (figure 14.1).
