ABSTRACT

In 1960 Beckett shared the Prix Formentor with the Argentinean author Jorge Louis Borges; and he began to be talked about as a potential candidate for the Nobel Prize. In 1969 came the news that he had won; he and Suzanne were holidaying in Tunisia when the news reached them, in the form of a telegram from Jerome Lindon

Dear Sam and Suzanne. In spite of everything, they have given you the Nobel Prize – I advise you to go into hiding. With affection.
