It’s a ‘rubbish bin’ suburb. That’s what they say about Wattfield. But the teachers at the school don’t think so and neither do the locals. However, they are aware that such negativity can rub off on a school and its students. So, the school and community work together to ensure that the kids understand that what they have is rich and unique. As Lorraine Taylor, the EO Coordinator, says, students are encouraged to understand that ‘they’re an OK bunch of people and that their rich multicultural mix is to be valued’. The school recently developed a policy on sex-based harassment and Tracey is one of three Year 10 students who have taken a leading role in its development and promotion. Tracey describes her involvement.
