ABSTRACT

Sikhism is the most recent in origin o f the recognised Indian religions. There are now more than ten million Sikhs in India (largely concentrated in the north-w estern state o f Punjab and the surrounding areas), where they significantly outnum ber the combined totals o f all Indian Bud dhists and Jains. As a consequence o f successive waves o f emigration over the past hundred years, there are also perhaps a further one million Sikhs settled in other parts o f the world, the most im portant communities o f this diaspora being found in N orth America and in the United Kingdom, where the numbers o f Sikhs are now comparable to those o f British Jewry.
