ABSTRACT

In Chapter 4 we considered and rejected arguments to the effect that promoting democracy through educational institutions was inappropriate or impossible. The way is now clear to consider the implications of a commitment to the democratic ideal we have elaborated for the organisation and content of education. The organisation of particular educational institutions and the content of education appropriate in a democracy will be considered in Chapters 6, 7 and 8. The present chapter is principally concerned with the distribution of educational opportunities.
