ABSTRACT

To be honest, when I was at school, I was not really interested in the work of artists. The faded and battered posters that were an attempt to adorn my school corridors included the usual suspects from Art History. Constable’s Hay Wain (1821) did not get my pulse racing, da Vinci’s Mona Lisa (c.1503-6) did not speak to me, and to this day I do not understand why van Gogh’s Sunflowers (1888) is so popular – a vase of dead flowers, how depressing.
