ABSTRACT

We return our focus in this chapter to data from our doctoral research projects and begin with an excerpt from Rachel’s fieldnotes, which highlight some of the complex and complicating practices involved in generating, interpreting, and representing data in research with young children:

Jesse approached me right away today. Seeing my video camera, he began swinging his head side to side for the camera and declared, ‘We’re the funny men.’ He raised his hands, gently hitting himself in the head with alternating hands: ‘Donk! Donk! Donk!’ Ismael jostled for position in front of the camera repeating, ‘I’m the funny man.’ He stuck his tongue out and waved his head back and forth, ‘Ahhh!’
