The trade in primary resources – blessing or curse?

Introduction Raul Prebisch and Hans Singer, two economists working independently after the Second World War, documented the thesis that the prices of primary produce compared with manufactures had a long-run tendency to decline. The evidence for this, and the implications for trade between developed and less developed nations, has stimulated much research, debate and controversy ever since.
