ABSTRACT

As Chapters 7 and 8 have shown, the past few years have seen a substantial growth in environmental legislation accompanied by the development of a range of national and international standards and environmental reporting frameworks. Some of these are effectively guidance on issues to be addressed in delivering a sustainable event. Some of them are environmental management systems. Many, however, lack simple practical tips, particularly for small-and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), sole traders and those in the voluntary sector who organise events at a modest scale. There is much advice that ranges from single-sheet sets of tips such as Top 10 Tips for Green Events, produced by In Any Event UK Ltd, through small booklets such as Defra’s Sustainable Events Guide, to complete books such as Meegan Jones’s excellent Sustainable Event Management. This chapter will indicate some of the advice available and where it can be obtained, and will cite examples of some of the content in the various materials. It will also discuss some of the difficulties in implementing sustainable management initiatives and illustrate this with a case study.
