ABSTRACT
This chapter is the first of two looking at sustainability and sustainable management. It looks at the more theoretical and developmental aspects of the term while Chapter 9 focuses on practicalities, though there is an inevitable overlap. This chapter aims to:
• examine the development of ideas on sustainability and their political, cultural and social context;
• trace the evolution of the idea within event academe and the event industry; • note the strand of green meetings; • explore the scope of sustainable protocols, principles and policies; and • evaluate aspects of the implementation of BS 8901 in the UK.
