ABSTRACT

In the recently published Routledge Handbook of Events (Page and Connell 2011) there is a chapter on events and sustainability that addresses a whole range of environmental impacts and the issue of sustainability. There is a separate chapter on urban legacy. Whole books have been written on the subject of Olympic cities and their urban legacies. A Google search on ‘event driven urban legacies’ yields 3.5 million results. Recent Olympic bids feature the topic substantially. The question inevitably arises as to why this issue receives such prominence.
