ABSTRACT

The Dimensions of Mastery Questionnaire (DMQ), discussed in this chapter, assesses several aspects of adults’ and children’s perceptions of children’s mastery-related behaviors. The DMQ is one of several measurement techniques, including challenging structured tasks and semi-structured play, developed to assess mastery motivation, which is related to but different from self-regulation. From neurons to neighborhoods (Shonkoff & Phillips, 2000) identi ed mastery motivation (the intrinsic drive to explore and master one’s environment) as a key developmental concept that should be included as part of a child’s evaluation.
