Since th e studie s o f the economi c valu e o f schooling an d highe r educatio n are generall y restricte d t o non-far m males , i t ma y see m tha t educatio n a s a form o f human capita l i s sex-specific, an d tha t i t is of value only t o male s who ar e no t engage d i n far m work . Then , too , th e abundan t cro p o f economic growt h model s wit h fe w exception s leav e agriculture out , an d thus seemingly , th e formatio n o f capita l an d th e employmen t o f labou r matters onl y whe n i t occur s i n sector s othe r tha n i n agriculture . I t is , o f course, a fact tha t far m peopl e ar e a tiny fractio n o f th e populatio n o f th e United Kingdo m an d th e Unite d States . I t i s also a fact tha t th e literatur e in bot h educatio n an d economic s i s mainl y produce d b y urba n oriente d scholars. Poets , however , continu e t o cheris h th e virtue s o f rura l livin g and som e ecolog y minde d urba n yout h ar e ric h enoug h t o affor d com - munes an d organi c gardens . But th e people fo r who m agricultur e i s a wa y of life , upward s o f hal f o f th e populatio n o f th e world , ar e no t rich . No r do the y hav e illusion s abou t nature ; fo r the y kno w it s harshness .
