The purpose of this chapter is to lay a foundation for your understanding of ethical issues in tourism-related research as they relate to your dissertation. Conducting your research in an ethical manner is about ensuring that work is conducted to the highest standards of integrity and with the greatest respect for the various stakeholders involved in your research, including your subjects (i.e. the participants in your research), your advisor/s, other students, and the wider institution at which you are working. Acting in an ethical manner in research is about the general principles of what ought to be done whereas morals are about what it is right to do (Hart 2005). Through the structure of your degree, you have the right to conduct independent research but in return you must take your responsibilities seriously.
