ABSTRACT
During the last two weeks of October 1918, more than 9,000 peopledied in New York City from a single cause. During the same two weeks, about 7,500 people died in Philadelphia, and another 4,400 in Chicago.2 These Americans did not die in fires or floods or earthquakes, but in a different kind of calamity: the great influenza epidemic of 1918.
