Knowing that I was going to have the surgery and my new life would be starting after that. I was getting to press the re-set button.

In general, studies have found that weight loss surgery is associated with improved outcomes for patients with greater life expectancy, reduced reliance on medication, better quality of life, more confi dence, less depression and more control over their eating. However, this experience is not universal and the road is not always smooth (as you will see in Chapter 10). Pressing the re-set button on your life, as it was described by one patient, can be a pretty scary business; everything that has been familiar to you – what you eat for dinner, how you cope with worry or upset, how others respond to you, your image in the mirror – all will be changed and uncertain. However much you want these changes, the process of adjustment can be hard work.
