ABSTRACT

The decision to have weight loss surgery is never going to be easy and you want to be sure that you will get the best possible care. In the UK the choice is between looking for funding through the NHS or paying privately. These routes both have benefi ts and disadvantages. Clearly the primary benefi t of NHS surgery is that it is free and you can be confi dent that you will receive comprehensive follow-up care, but you will face strict rules about who is eligible for funding and there may be a long waiting time. Going privately offers a shorter wait and you may be able to have surgery at a hospital nearer home, and at a time that suits you, however the cost can be prohibitive and private clinics are variable in the quality of follow-up care included in the package.
