ABSTRACT

Champions of failure Throughout this book there has been a nagging tension. I have argued in favour of sport, always stressing the positive, uplifting effects and its quality as a provider of achievement orientations. On the other hand, I am forced to concede that many of the hopes stoked up by sports involvement are destined to remain unfulfilled. When all is said and done, sport is not a viable career for the majority of aspirants. But, crucially, it will continue to attract black youth and, for that reason, this work contains a warning.
