ABSTRACT

Considered in isolation, the comments in the last chapter would give bountiful gifts to the critic of sport. Those wishing to denigrate the part played by sport and hoping to reveal the way in which too much involvement in sport interferes significantly with other aspects of education would look at my examples as support for the view that sport is over-emphasized in schools and the effect this has on education standards is, overall, negative. To many this has become a self-evident article of faith, particularly as many black kids fare well in sport but not in other academic areas.
