ABSTRACT

We were fully aware that we would deviate from the conventional conversation about energy when we decided to write this book. Our goal was not to make an economic or geopolitical case for or against a certain energy technology. We did not aim to persuade the reader that polar bears may not exist in the near future unless the world changes the way it uses its energy. We chose not to put all the blame for global economic, social, and environmental problems on oil companies and embark on a moral crusade to eradicate fossil fuels from our lives. We premised our approach on the lack of a political and normative agenda when we agreed to “check” our personal views at the door.
