An approach has been described by which suitably qualified professionals can, step by step, reach a maximum number of teachers through individual and group discussions in which they can gain additional knowledge and skills by focusing on the context in which they are to be used. In this way they can learn to cope with the emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties of more pupils and help the children themselves to cope better. A feature of the method was to discuss a specific difficulty in a way which took account of the teachers' need for both immediate and long-term help by gaining new insights into the effects of emotional and social factors in children's learning. This helped to optimise the teachers resources to design the new learning experiences understood as strengthening the children's capacity for learning.
