ABSTRACT

The season o f A IDS is upon us, as anyone passing a newstand, browsing through a bookstore, or cruising the airways via remotecontrol knows well. Unhappily, the majority o f book titles in the 1987/88 US winter-spring listings on AIDS are clustered at one end o f the spectrum o f possible approaches to this most complicated o f cultural and scientific phenomena — these are the guides on how-toavoid-AIDS and how-to-have-safe-but-exciting-sex. Their number is seemingly legion, and their range is from uptight-conservative to adventurous-liberatory.
