ABSTRACT
Many poor black women spend significant portions of their lives alone (Bernard, 1966; Staples, 1994; Wilson, 1987, 1996). The lives of women in the present study clearly support this assertion. Recall that of nineteen women who participated in the ethnographic interviews, only four had been legally married, two of whom were divorced and none of whom were currently living with their husbands.
