ABSTRACT

We use the term ‘competency’ rather than the more usually employed term ‘skills’ because competency includes attitudes and knowledge, as well as skills. As we discussed in Chapter 2, if we wish to help people to be

empowered and autonomous, we need to teach more than behaviours and skills: we need to help people think for themselves and develop sound and lasting attitudes and values, which direct their behaviour in consistent, fundamental and ethically sound ways.
