Designing courses Teachers in open and distance learning systems have to develop or buy in materials within the context of a series of courses leading to the awards that the institution offers. The design phase involves:

• defining the aims and objectives of the curriculum, in relation to what the students will be asked to do, and what awards (if any) they will work towards;

• agreeing the content of courses; • deciding on the method of teaching (in open, flexible and distance learning,

this involves choice ofmedia and technologies); • designing the assessment strategies; • designing the support systems.
