ABSTRACT
T HIS CHAPTER SEEKS to highlight the similarities and differences between the British and French governments' experience with a strategic nuclear deterrent. It begins by addressing the underlying reasons for, and the origins of, France's quest for nuclear weapons. It then assesses the development of strategic theory, targeting policy and weapons systems. The chapter ends with an appraisal of the prospects for Anglo-French nuclear cooperation.
