ABSTRACT
As colleges have acquired new functions in response to changing circumstances so the collegial tradition has evolved. For example, the commitment to a pedagogy centred on tutorial teaching was not always central to college teaching but we associate colleges with the tutorial system because over time the two have become closely entwined. So much so that when we think of the collegial tradition it conjures up an image of tutorial teaching; a particular relationship between don and undergraduate in the pursuit of knowledge. Furthermore, we wonder whether collegiality can be sustained without the possession of endowment income because of the threat to institutional autonomy posed by financial dependence upon the state. Consequently, does the availability of generous endowment income become one of the vital prerequisites of collegiality rather than a pleasant luxury? So, rather than helping to sustain collegiality endowment income becomes part of the definition.
