ABSTRACT
Having developed a position that acknowledges the centrality of habits and conventions formed in reaction to circumstances, the Scots proceed to an analysis of the spontaneous emergence of key social institutions such as property, law and government, which is conducted in the light of these insights. They deploy the spontaneous order approach through a conjectural history aimed at the explanation of these institutions.
