ABSTRACT

In this chapter we will consider the possibility that Showing of Love fulfils a didactic function as part of an existing late medieval culture of oral and visual education. A concerted study of the ways in which the religious community shared and accumulated Christian learning will extend and complement the findings of Chapters 1 and 2. To build on the idea of Julian’s concern to educate the senses of her Christian audience, fulfilling her anchoress’s role as a source of good counsel and education, this chapter will examine the ways in which Julian shared the teaching of Showing of Love visually and orally.
