Charles de Gaulle, in his memoirs, famously recorded ‘a certain idea of France’. This was ‘inspired by sentiment as well as reason’, both of which led to greatness: that is, France’s ‘exceptional destiny’. Undeniably, the general left his imprint on postwar France and especially on the Fifth Republic, shaped in his own image.
