ABSTRACT
In modern construction timber joists are normally at 400mm centres (16 inches) and are usually
made from imported softwood. The depth of a joist resists its tendency to bend or deform under load and
the width of a joist resists its tendency to twist. Ideally the joists should span the shortest distance
across a room to keep the joist depth to a minimum.
