ABSTRACT

IDENTIFICATION Before working on a transmission it is essential to identify it. The VIN number (see Chapter 2 – ‘Chassis’) will give basic information about the transmission; but this is usually restricted to transmission type – for example 4-speed automatic, or 6-speed manual. The transmission will have its own identifi cation (ID) tag. The ID tag is usually located so that it can be seen without removing the transmission; it may be stamped on casting lug, a thin plate stuck on a fl at surface with glue, or a thicker plate secured with a rivet or screw. The information will show the model year, the transmission type, the model number and the serial number. The numbers will also indicate the year of manufacture, the day of manufacture in Julian date format and in some cases the shift time.
