ABSTRACT

News is the distribution of information affecting people or information of an interest to the largest audience.

The passing of information to the general populace has a long and often confrontational history. People generally welcome good news, but bad news has to serve a specific purpose to be acceptable. Yet, one of the greatest attractions, as shown by the size of the audience and number of readers, is bad news; gory, bloody, violent, and yes, sex-filled news. The contradiction between what people should be interested in and the stories that attract the largest audience has yet to be resolved, but that fact affects the decision making in the gathering, editing, and delivering of news. It does not matter whether the medium is print, television, radio, or the Internet.
