ABSTRACT
This is the first of a series of chapters which consider different categories of employee, rather than the system as a whole. This chapter looks at managers, with Chapter 15 discussing the specific issue of managing managers in the international context. Chapter 16 then considers manual and clerical employees, with Chapter 17 providing a case study of technical change. Although this is a crude division, it mirrors the traditional status-divide and allows the exploration of policies and practices typically applied to each.
